Think Before You Bite: Five surprising and not so surprising foods and habits that can crack your teeth!

At Como Dental Design in Lower Westchester, NY, one of the most common dental emergencies we see is a cracked or broken tooth. And almost every time, the story starts the same way.

“I was just eating something simple and suddenly I felt something sharp.”

The truth is that many everyday foods can put unexpected stress on your teeth. Even strong, healthy teeth can crack when they meet something harder than expected. The good news is that most of these situations are preventable with a little awareness.

Here are five common culprits we regularly see in our New Rochelle dental office.

Popcorn

Popcorn feels light and harmless. It is soft, fluffy, and easy to snack on during a movie night. But hidden among those soft pieces can be unpopped kernels.

When you bite down expecting something soft and instead hit a rock hard kernel, the sudden force can cause a tooth to crack. We often see patients with otherwise healthy teeth that split simply because of one unexpected kernel.

You do not have to give up popcorn. Just slow down, chew carefully, and be mindful of those last few bites at the bottom of the bowl.

Olive Pits and Fruit Pits

Olives, cherries, and even some prepared foods can occasionally contain a pit. If you are not expecting it, biting down can cause immediate damage.

The problem is not the olive itself. It is the surprise. Teeth crack when they encounter something hard that they were not prepared for.

When enjoying olives or stone fruits, take a moment to check whether they are truly pitted. A little caution can save you from an emergency visit.

Hard Breads and Crunchy Snacks

We all love a crusty baguette, a thick artisan roll, crunchy pretzels, or toasted bagel chips. But very hard, dense breads and snacks can put a lot of pressure on your teeth.

Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it is also brittle. When you bite into something extremely hard without testing it first, small cracks can form. Over time, those cracks can worsen and lead to a fracture.

If you enjoy crunchy foods, take smaller bites and let your back teeth do the work slowly. If you ever feel discomfort while chewing, that is a sign to have it checked.

Hard and Sticky Candy

Hard candies like jawbreakers, peanut brittle, and rock candy are obvious risks. But even candies that seem harmless can cause problems.

Sour balls, caramel chews, gummy candies, and chewy taffy can stress your teeth in two ways. Hard candies tempt you to bite down. Sticky candies can grab onto fillings or crowns and pull them loose.

Teeth that already have large fillings or crowns are more vulnerable to fracture. If you love sweets, enjoy them in moderation and avoid chewing directly on hard pieces.

And if something does come loose, keep it safe and call us right away. Do not assume it is ruined. Many restorations can be re cemented if handled quickly.

Using Your Teeth as Tools

This one surprises many patients. Opening snack bags, tearing protein bar wrappers, or biting into packaging may seem harmless in the moment. But your teeth are not tools.

We recently saw a patient who chipped a tooth trying to open a small plastic container. It happens more often than you would think.

Your teeth are designed for chewing food, not tearing plastic or opening packages. Keeping scissors handy can prevent an avoidable dental emergency.

What Happens When a Tooth Cracks

Sometimes a cracked tooth causes sharp pain right away. Other times, it may just feel sensitive when biting or chewing. In some cases, you might feel a rough edge with your tongue.

Even small cracks should be evaluated quickly. Left untreated, they can deepen and lead to infection or the need for more complex treatment.

At Como Dental Design in New Rochelle, we use advanced imaging and careful clinical evaluation to determine the extent of the crack. Treatment may range from a simple bonding procedure to a crown, or in some cases, more advanced care. The earlier we see you, the more conservative the solution usually is.
